This image of the Royal Observatory at sunset (19/02/2010 17:07) confirmed
for me the value of the Edinburgh U3A Photography Group’s approach
of setting a new task each month. Here it forced me to experiment and discover
how exposure modification is achievable even with a point-and-shoot camera.
Wide-angle,
auto-mode yielded a poor image. But modest zoom, combined with
the exposure being set by half-depressing the shutter button, with the camera
pointing at the horizon slightly away from the sunset, before pushing the
shutter button down the rest of the way, when the sunset had been re-framed,
yielded a much improved (and natural) photograph.
